AM: 5 easy

 

PM: 9 on treadmill with 4 at tempo pace. Since I have a chest cold and haven't done a good tempo in a while I started slow and sped up. 6:00, 5:56, 5:52, 5:49. Actually have to quit about 30 seconds early to prevent throwing up. Probably a combination of fatigue and the pre-run root beer.

AM: 7 easy

PM: attempted to run up to the top of the Pffiferhorn (11300 feet) from white pine trailhead (7700 feet). Ended up losing the trail at about 9700 feet and went the wrong way. Quit at 10300 feet when I hit a dead end ridge. This run was more for fun than training purposes.

I've been really bad at updating and managed to get 3 weeks behind. Oh well.

Today was probably the last good workout before St George. I have been feeling like my training was not where it should be. I have put in a lot of miles, but not much speed work, I like to do a half marathon 3-4 weeks before a marathon, but couldn't fit one into my schedule this time around. Today I tried to put in an equivalent effort.

22 miles. 11 up big cottonwood canyon at 8:42 average pace. 2700 foot gain. A few seconds slower than the last equivalent run a few weeks ago, but also more of a headwind. Also I've been sick for the last 2 weeks and am still dealing with a fair amount of chest congestion. Then I did 10 marathon pace effort miles downhill. 57:25. The 2500 foot drop helps a lot, but honestly anything over 3-4 % starts to become counterproductive for me. Too much braking. I was fastest on the gentler slopes.  Slowest mile was on the 10% drop.

Very nice run that didn't really didn't leave me too beat up. Good sign that I might survive St George.

Made a second attempt at making it to the top of the pffiferhorn. Made it, but the a lot of the time wan't remotely close to running. Still worth it. 11300 feet from 7600.

Up millcreek canyon. 6 miles up at 8:40 average pace. Then 6 mile marathon pace run down.

5 miles on the treadmill with 3 at 6:00 pace. Tried to see if I could eat "gummy" food at race pace. I can't. It's still gels for me. They taste bad, but I can get and keep them down without slowing down the running pace.
